The Fano Canal is home to a watercourse that, although fed by groundwater through a series of outcrops and small springs in the upper sections, only becomes perennial from the spring located below ‘La Chiusa’. The presence of this watercourse makes the area rich in vegetation.

The town of Salve was founded, according to legend, by the Roman centurion Salvius in 267 BC. It later expanded following the destruction of two ancient hamlets that stood in the immediate vicinity.
