Santa Maria di Leuca.
For 10 years now, the territory of Santa Maria di Leuca has been part of the Costa Otranto – Santa Maria di Leuca e Bosco di Tricase Park, established by the Apulia Region to safeguard the eastern coast of Salento, rich in valuable architectural heritage and important animal and plant species.
The caves.
Santa Maria di Leuca is also known to most for its beautiful caves of karstic origin. The cave ‘del Diavolo’ is located at Punta Ristola. Its name derives from an ancient popular superstition, which attributed to the presence of devils the mournful and powerful rumblings that could be heard in the cave, in reality nothing more than the sound of waves breaking on the cliff.
Near Punta Ristola is Grotta Porcinara, of considerable historical importance. Archaeologists in this area have found a double walled structure, the eschera. The cave was excavated in three rooms and on some walls it is still possible to see some engravings with references to Jupiter and some mythological characters such as Rhedon, Aphrodite and Madaraus. Grotta delle Tre Porte is located to the west, up the coast towards the marina of San Gregorio. The name is due to its conformation, which in fact groups three entrances. This cave can be visited by boat, where one can enjoy magnificent bathing in a sea of Caribbean colours.
To the east, there is the Grotta delle Vore, the Grotta di Musconovo, the Grotta di Terradico, the Grotta di Ortocupo, the Grotta delle Giole, the Grotta della Totola and the Grotta Capeddhe. Along the coasts of Salento, hundreds of coastal towers can be found, and they could not be missed in Santa Maria di Leuca.
The dead man’s tower, located at the beginning of the Lungo Mare Cristoforo Colombo, presumably dates back to the 16th century. It was used to sight the ships of the Turks who invaded the Salento peninsula for a long period.
