Ancient Mill in the Historic Center of Morciano di Leuca

Morciano di Leuca
The ancient mill is not the only late medieval structure found in Morciano di Leuca. In fact, during the reconstruction of the paving in Piazza San Giovanni and nearby Via Roma, underground oil mills (frantoi ipogei) were discovered. These underground oil mills, also known as trappeti, were carved into the hard limestone (tufo).
It is believed that their construction began from the 11th-13th centuries until the early 18th century. One reason for the preference for building underground oil mills was the preservation of oil in an environment where the temperature remained fairly constant (the other reason was the construction cost).
