MORCIANO DI LEUCA

A small municipality in Salento, Morciano di Leuca also includes the village of Barbarano del Capo and the marina of Torre Vado, a renowned tourist destination for its rocky and sandy coastline and fresh spring waters. Underground oil mills and baroque churches still populate Morciano di Leuca, which is also notably close to the Messapian site of Vereto. The imposing military castle built in the 14th century for defensive purposes is still visible in Morciano.

TORRE VADO

Known for its wide seafront and strategic location on the Ionian coast, Torre Vado is one of the most popular tourist spots thanks to its expansive sandy beaches and freshwater rocky coves. The coastal tower, once used for spotting, gives Torre Vado its name and frames the small, year-round port. It tells a piece of local history: built in the 16th century by Charles V of Habsburg to protect the territory from the Saracens, it was known as “cavallara” because a mounted messenger would depart from there to reach the inland in case of enemy attacks.
